Find out how to choose your own word for the year in 5 simple steps. 2020 is filled with potential and this post can help you reach yours.
Choosing My Word
Happy New Year! It’s that time to come up with a word of the year again! Last year my word was DOER. You can read more about that HERE.
This year I was considering a few words. HEALTH was one of them, because I feel like I have really neglected my health over the last few years and need to really focus on it again.
PRESENCE was another one. I find it really hard to turn my brain off sometimes and focus on what it is that I’m doing. When I’m with my kids I want to be very present with them. When I’m doing stuff for myself, I don’t want to be feeling guilty about not being with my kids.
I felt like those two were very specific, and I needed a word that encompassed more for the year. Then I was reading something, and a word caught my eye, and I thought – that’s it!
My Word of 2020
INTENTION will be my word to focus on in 2020. Wikipedia defines the word INTENTION as a mental state that represents a commitment to carrying out an action or actions in the future. Intention involves mental activities such as planning and forethought.
I feel like this word can encompass so many aspects of my life. For example, I want to be intentional with my eating. I want to be intentional with my goals. I want to be intentional with my family. Most importantly, I want to be intentional with my time.
I highly recommend choosing your word for 2020. Make it meaningful, and something that will help you focus on creating the year you want. There were many times over 2019 where I looked at my word of the year and it pushed me to do things I was afraid of.
How to come up with a word for the year:
- Visualize how you want your year to look.
- Either brainstorm or free-write what your goals are and see if any words stand out to you.
- Pick a word and share it with family, friends or on your social media to help you stay accountable.
- Make your word visible. Create a vision board. Put it on the screensaver of your phone. Use it as your password. This will help you to stay focused.
- Take time to reflect monthly. Make sure the word is serving you. If not, there are no rules, you can switch it up!
Good luck choosing your word of the year, and make sure not to settle for anything less than great in 2020!
